Communications Associate (Part-Time)

Overview

Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra (BYSO) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in Bellevue, Washington, established to provide a unique and stimulating musical environment for Eastside youth seeking to advance their potential beyond traditional in-school programs. Now with eight large orchestras and three smaller instrumental ensembles, BYSO has been serving students in elementary through high school since 1964. BYSO is a thriving, fiscally stable organization with a dedicated Board poised to further its Mission:

To enhance the lives of student musicians by providing dynamic musical experiences, fostering collaboration, confidence, and personal responsibility through the pursuit of artistic excellence.

BYSO focuses intensively on each student’s musicianship with a commitment to guide and support the whole person and uniquely complements and builds upon both school music programs and private instruction. BYSO is poised to grow from a local youth orchestra organization into a recognized, regional leader in youth orchestra. BYSO is a forward- looking organization, innovating and evaluating its organizational structure and infrastructure investments to broaden its reach and impact in the community while maintaining, at its core, a program focused upon expanding the capabilities of its student musicians. Position

The Communications Associate tells the story of BYSO through the written word, photographs, and graphics design. Under the direction of the Executive Director, they collaborate with employees across the organization to share BYSO’s work and impact. This role is responsible for the execution of marketing activities & campaigns to advance BYSO’s mission and find new ways to deepen relationships with our students, families, and broader community, as well as the main disseminator of information to our enrolled families and students.

This is an in-office position with the potential to evolve into hybrid.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead annual marketing plans to maximize opportunities for visibility throughout the Eastside Community, Greater Seattle Area and nationally.
  • Work with the executive director to create and implement annual marketing plans to maximize opportunities for earned and contributed revenue.
  • Create materials and messaging for organizational and programmatic marketing.
  • Create materials supporting concerts and special events.
  • Manage creation and dissemination of designed email communication
  • Manage Social Media Accounts (FB, Instagram, YouTube)
  • Act as principal photographer for BYSO.

Other Responsibilities

  • Publicity and Media Relations: Elevate the profile of BYSO in the media and the public at large to promote the mission and vision of the organization.
  • Website and Electronic Media: Manage and Update Website and social media accounts for the organization
  • Attend All Scheduled Concerts
  • Attend Monday evening rehearsals as needed.
  • Attend Weekend retreats as needed.
  • Attend Community events as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Highly organized, self-motivated, efficient, and excels at time management skills.
  • High degree of flexibility in response to daily shifting priorities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and able to work with a wide variety of personalities, maintaining a professional demeanor when faced with challenging situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong attention to detail is essential.
  • Creative problem-solving ability.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to vehicle required for transportation needs.
  • Must be able to work occasional evenings, weekends, and some holidays as required by the performance schedule.
  • Must be able to handle the physical demands commensurate with the position including lifting up to 35 lbs.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite, Mailchimp, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Salesforce, Google Sheets, Dropbox, Survey Monkey, and WordPress.
  • Proficient in creating content for and managing social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn).
  • Strong photography and photo editing skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing/graphics design/arts management or equivalent; 1-2 years of experience working with non-profit educational/arts/musical organizations can substitute for the degree.
  • Knowledge of classical music, orchestral repertoire, instrumentation, and industry practices preferred but not required.

Compensation:

$23.00 – $25.00 per hour DOE. This is part-time non-exempt hourly position, averaging 15 hours per week.

Benefits include Accrued Vacation Days, Accrued Sick Days, and 12 paid holidays per year.
