About Summer Camps

Become a Better Musician in One Fun Week

At Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra summer camp, you’ll meet lots of other musicians who are just like you: serious about music—but not serious all the time! You’ll study your instrument with professional musicians, learn new skills, prepare a great last-day concert—and have tons of fun along the way.

Rehearse in an orchestra, play in a small ensemble with your own professional coach, get specialized instruction for your instrument, and enjoy a fun music workshop to help you improve your musical skills and understanding, such as drumming, ukulele, or sight reading. We’ll provide a morning snack; you bring lunch! On Friday, there will be a free concert involving all camp participants – family and friends are all invited!

See camp sessions and registration below. Tuition includes all instruction, one daily snack, camp T-shirt, water bottle, and music folder. Student brings instrument and lunch.

After-Hours Care

Extended morning and afternoon care will be available at all of our summer camps from 8:00 am and until 5:30 pm, Monday through Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, for an additional fee of $16 per hour per student. You may sign up for any number of hours on any day or days of your child’s week at camp (except Friday afternoon).

Summer Camp Sessions

Summer Strings, July 8-12 2019 (For Cadet level or Suzuki students)

Young musicians mix music with fun at this light-hearted week of camp. In addition to daily orchestra rehearsals, students have professional coaching on their instrument, a Music Exploration class, outdoor snack and lunch breaks — and plenty of fun together, especially on Wacky Wednesday and at the Super Water Fight (no instruments allowed!).

Musicians will gather Monday-Friday from 9am to 2pm.

Instruments accepted: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass

Summer Strings is for strings only. Musicians must have played their string instrument for at least one school year and be entering grade 1–7 next fall.

This camp is a good fit for students at the level of BYSO’s Cadet String Orchestra. Students who have been training in the Suzuki method (or a similar technique-focused program) and are ready to start reading music are a great fit for Summer Strings! Certified Suzuki teachers will work with these students on note-reading and ensemble skills and help them begin integrating comfortably into the larger orchestra.

Summer Symphony, July 15-19 2019 (For Debut or Premiere level)

Accelerate your musical skills by working with a full orchestra this summer! Strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion come together in this special camp experience. In addition to two daily orchestra rehearsals, students will have instrument sectionals coached by professional musicians, chamber ensemble practices, and a fun elective class of their choice such as world drumming or ukulele.

Instruments accepted: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Euphonium, Tuba, and all Percussion

Musicians must have played in an orchestra or band for at least one school year and be able to read music. This camp is a good fit for students at the level of BYSO’s Debut String Orchestra or Premiere Orchestra.

Musicians meet Monday-Friday from 9am to 2:30pm.

Summer Music Institute, July 22-26 2019 (For Sinfonia, Philharmonia, & Youth Symphony level)

An intensive musical experience under the baton of Dr. Teresa Metzger Howe, BYSO’s Music Director and Youth Symphony conductor. This camp has shared focus on chamber music and full orchestra! All students work in instrument sectionals and small chamber ensembles with professional musicians and enjoy elective classes in other musical disciplines.

For the serious teen musician, the Summer Music Institute (SMI) is an excellent way to expand your musical horizons and keep your skills sharp during the break between concert seasons, all in an atmosphere of fun, friendship, and mutual support
