Frequently Asked Questions
- Can a student leave early/arrive late?
No. Student participants should arrive at 6:00 and will be permitted to warm up in the designated warmup area, but are expected to attend the entire duration of their instrument/room’s session, to support and learn from their peers. - What should I wear?
You should view this as a professional performance, so dress clothes are appropriate (no jeans, hoodies, etc.). When in doubt, concert black is appropriate (or follow your BYSO ensemble’s guidelines regarding performance attire). - Do I need to memorize my music?
Memorization is not required. - Do I need to bring music?
BYSO will provide a copy of your music to your clinician. You may choose to perform from memory, but you may want to bring a copy of your music so the clinician can refer to specific spots in the music that you can reference easily. - How much music should I perform?
If you are playing a long piece, you should expect that the clinician might stop you before the performance is complete. This is to maximize the amount of instructional time. - Do I need to bring a stand?
No. BYSO will provide a music stand for each room. - Do I need an accompanist?
No, the masterclasses will be unaccompanied. BYSO does not have access to enough pianos/keyboards for each room, so students will play without piano. Expect that adjudicators may decide to skip over spots of the music that are accompaniment-heavy. - Can my family come watch?
YES! The masterclasses are free and open to the public, and we encourage you to invite your family/friends/private teacher to attend. - Is there anything else I should bring?
Extra strings, reeds, or other supplies are always a great idea to have on hand. - Are photos/videos allowed?
Yes, but no flash. - Can I change performance times with another student?
No.
