BYSO Summer Camp Program

BYSO Camps are designed to provide excellent summer music education and orchestral training for student musicians. The program includes all orchestral strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion. Each session will have a final Friday evening concert

Students will also participate in recreational activities, fun exploratory music adventures such as, but not limited to, folk dancing, hand chimes, jazz/rock for orchestral instruments, choir, secondary instruments, marimba and African drums, film music, and conducting.

Session 1—July 14 – 18, 2008, 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Musicians ages 7 – 13

Lake Sammamish Foursquare Church, 14434 NE 8th St, Bellevue

Orchestra, chamber music, instrument sectionals. Students receive a good blend of educational and recreational activities during the week. Children will participate in fun exploratory music adventures such as, but not limited to, folk dancing, hand chimes, jazz or orchestral instruments, secondary instruments, African drums or percussion, film music and conducting. 


Theme of Week One: Knight and Maidens – music about royalty: activities may include processionals, recessionals, fanfares, jousting tournaments, coronations, prince charming and knights errant.

This session is designed for musicians with at least one year of school instrument experience or at least six months of private instruction. This camp is for those who have completed first grade through 6th grade. (Ages 7 – 13) If you are currently in BYSO Debut or Premiere, this is the place for you.

Instruments accepted: violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, French horn, baritone, euphonium, tuba, all percussion and tympani.

Session 2—July 21-25, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Musicians ages 13 – 21

Jubilee Reach Center, 14200 SE 13th Pl, Bellevue
Orchestra, chamber music, instrument sectionals. Musicians receive a good blend of educational and recreational activities during the week. Classes are taught by highly skilled professionals who have success in the business of music.


Theme for Week Two: Real-life Skills Music Training Boot Camp Classes may include but are not limited to the following: Instruction in sight reading, playing jobs, studio recording, conducting, chamber music group dynamics and techniques, improvisation, sound tech, audition techniques for instrumentalists, rhythm, and symphony orchestra.

This session is designed for musicians with at least three years of school instrument experience or at least two years of private instruction. This camp is for students who have completed seventh grade through those who are in college. (Ages 13 – 21) If you are currently in BYSO Sinfonia or Youth—this is the place for you.

 

Record a real DVD with sound technicians and film footage using a digital clicker with Hummie Mann, composer/conductor/arranger of TV, film and video music, and the creator/lead instructor of the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program teaching film scoring in Seattle, Edinburgh and Copenhagen.

A two-time Emmy Award winning composer/arranger, Hummie Mann has scored more than 50 feature and television films for many of Hollywood's best known directors including Mel Brooks, Jonathan Kaplan, Norman Jewison, Peter Bogdanovich, Rob Reiner, and Joe Dante. His feature film credits include Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Thomas and the Magic Railroad, the IMAX film Cyberworld 3D, Year of the Comet, Benefit of the Doubt, After the Rain, and Wooly Boys, starring Peter Fonda and Kris Kristofferson.

Mann's TV credits include the scores to the miniseries P.T. Barnum, the miniseries remake of In Cold Blood, the CBS movie first do no harm, starring Meryl Streep, and episodes of Showtime's Masters of Horror series: Homecoming (which premiered to a standing ovation in 2005 at the Torino Film Festival in Italy) and The Screwfly Solution - both for famed Horror director Joe Dante. Mann has also conducted the scores to many other films including Ghost Rider, The Grudge, A Walk to Remember, City Slickers and The Addams Family and his orchestrations can be heard on countless films including Mad Money, Georgia Rule, Prince of Tides, Sister Act and Misery. He is a current board member of the Seattle Composer's Alliance, the NW Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

BYSO Summer Music Camp studentsFees and Tuition

A non-refundable reservation fee of $50 is due with your camp application, and is applied towards the tuition fee.

2008 full tuition is $250.00, and includes all camp expenses. All tuition fees must be paid in full prior to the start of Camp. If your camp reservation is cancelled after July 15th, all but the reservation fee of $50 is refunded. All fees are non-refundable after the start of the program.
 

Application Form and Instructions

Please print and compete all portions of the student application form and mail it to the address below, with the $50 reservation fee. Space is limited, therefore early reservations are encouraged.
